I am delighted and excited to be able to offer this birding holiday to the wonderful birder's paradise that is Costa Rica. It is compact- less than 9 times the size of Cheshire!- yet it is home to vast numbers of orchids, butterflies, animals and, of course, a huge diversity of birds. Costa Rica has recorded some 10% of the world's birds and during our visit we should find around 400 species.
This Central American republic recognises the importance of its endemic eco-systems by careful protective and management measures which combine to produce a fantastic wildlife environment
IThe country comprises a terrific mix of habitats each containing its own "endemics" and we will visit all of the key birding hotspots.
This is tropical birding at its most exciting, right from our first hotel's gardens where we can find the White-eared Ground-sparrow, the Blue-crowned Motmot, a range of colourful hummingbirds, and maybe even the Prevost’s Ground-sparrow.
The birds will come thick and fast, and often they are not shy which allows great photographic opportunities- and even their names indicate the exotic nature of the place with names such as Resplendent Quetzal (often said to be the world's most beautiful bird), Flame-coloured Tanager, Grey-tailed Mountain Gem, Volcano Hummingbird and Snowy Cotinga.
Our owling visits should pick up Black and White, Striped and Mottled among others.
Our boat trip will also get us Tiger Herons, Agami Herons, White-fronted Nunbird, and all six species of Kingfishers belonging to the Americas.
